It still looks like a Mustang but it's the toughest one yet. - Car and Driver, November 1968 The Car and Driver writers continued with their first reactions to the then-new Mustang offering: Outwardly the (new Mustang) is a blend of dragster and Trans-Am sedan. A Ford magazine ad for the launch of the redesigned put it this way: Someone finally built a better Mustang. Clearly, the new Mustang was a major introduction. Offered here is a restored and refreshed 1970 Ford Mustang SportsRoof (fastback) in sliver-and-black over black. A Kansas car most of its life, the current odometer reading is 85,288 miles, or just under 1,675 miles per-year on average since new. The exterior metallic silver paint shows excellent gloss and consistency. It was a perfect choice for the professional respray (including door jambs, the underside of the trunk lid, and the hood) for this legendary blue-oval model, and the results are impressive. The finish perfectly highlights the body's flowing lines, in particular its roofline, rear-fender air intakes, and forward-sloping front end. The gloss-black, wide hood-stripe over the large, functional ram-air intake (and echoed on the rocker panels) makes a serious performance statement. A matte-black finish on the lower-front, Mach 1-style spoiler, front grille, rear-window louvers, and rear-deck spoiler is a perfect complement. There is no damage, no dings, and no dents on any sheet-metal panel. Chrome trim is likewise excellent across front and rear bumpers, grille trim, window trim, and door handles. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Factory badging, including the front, running-horse grille emblem and fuel-filler cap, is properly in place. All lighting lenses, including on the twin, in-the-grille headlights (a change from '69) and the six taillights, are clear and uncracked. Cabin glass is free of flaws. The AmericanRacing® 5-spoke, gray-finished wheels in perfect condition are mounted with BFGoodrich® Radial T/A, raised-white-letter tires. Inside, the stock horizontally pleated, black-vinyl-upholstered front bucket seats and folding rear-bench seat is in excellent condition; the seating surfaces are free of damage or serious indications of wear. A horizontal design (with Mustang running-horse emblem) highlights black molded door panels. Window cranks are door-mounted. Chrome door-sill trim (with blue-oval Ford logo) is in excellent condition, evidence of owner care. A wood-rim Grant® GT steering wheel with three brushed-metal spokes frames four circular instrument openings. The padded black dash is free of damage. The center stack includes an upgraded Questar® audio head unit, with heat and ventilation slide-level controls below. The original T-lever shifter for the automatic transmission is mounted on the console, which also includes a storage compartment beneath the center armrest. Black cabin carpeting is in place throughout with removable stereo speakers in place on the rear-cabin floor. The car's trunk floor is clean; no matting is in place to allow clear views of the trunk surfaces. Opening the hood reveals the 302-cubic-inch Ford V8 (wearing its original, Ford-blue block paint) in a clean, tidy engine bay, thankfully not treated with shine-enhancing sprays. The cast, finned valve covers bear the Powered by Ford identification, and
